Environmental Specialist
Applicant must have a bachelor’s degree in engineering or natural sciences, with a strong background in sciences such as biology and chemistry. Equivalent job-related experience will be considered. Experience in state and federal environmental regulations, environmental analysis and permitting, and a basic knowledge of the regulatory and legislative system is preferred. The qualified applicant requires a general understanding of, or the aptitude to learn company operations, including steam plant, combustion turbine, and renewables, as well as oil-filled electrical equipment handling procedures and waste disposal practices. Applicant must have superior organizational skills, the ability to process and interpret data, excellent verbal and written communication skills, and a professional demeanor when dealing with controversial issues.
Successful applicant will assist with environmental responsibilities through providing accurate and timely reports, records, and documentation. Ensure compliance with permit requirements and regulations. Collaborate, provide guidance, and develop training for Company personnel as necessary. Develop documents and applications to obtain the necessary permits and approvals from regulatory agencies. Process and interpret data, including the ability to evaluate, analyze, and summarize the impact of environmental regulations. Communicate and maintain a strong rapport with plant personnel, environmental consultants, and regulatory agency staff. Conduct environmental inspections and investigate environmental incidents. Provide overall assistance with Otter Tail Power Company’s environmental sustainability responsibilities.
