Position Overview
The University of Kansas School of Music seeks a Piano Technician to execute the tuning, regulation, voicing, repairs, preventive maintenance and other duties to maintain the piano inventory at an optimal level. Although inventory varies, approximately 135 instruments are in use at the Lawrence Campus. The successful candidate will require education or experience in the field and be able to contribute to a work environment that encourages knowledge of respect for, and development of skills to engage with those of other cultures and backgrounds.
Job Description
95% Produce quality tunings and perform routine repairs, including string replacement and maintenance on a variety of piano brands. Perform concert preparation for performance pianos in the School of Music and other locations as needed. Perform fine regulation and voicing, cleaning, lubricating, aligning, leveling, hammer filing, traveling parts, etc. on University pianos, including those used for practice by our piano performance majors. Documents and maintains records on repairs and maintenance activities. Identify facility issues related to humidity and temperature which adversely impact the instrument longevity.
5% Other related tasks as assigned.
Position Requirements
Evening and weekend work may be required due to concert and event scheduling. This position is located in-person/on-site at the Lawrence Campus supervised by the Dean of the Music School and may have the opportunity for a flexible work schedule.
Required Qualifications
- Certification as a Registered Piano Technician (RPT) by the Piano Technicians Guild (PTG), or a minimum of 5 years experience in the tuning, repair, and maintenance of pianos in a full-time.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills as demonstrated by application materials, interview and references.
- Experience in parts replacement of piano actions.
Preferred Qualifications
- Additional certifications or continuing education in the field of piano technology is desired.
- Ability to organize, schedule, assess, and manage a large and diverse piano inventory under high-use conditions.
- Specialized training and/or experience with Steinway or harpsichord tuning/repair.
